Imagine you’ve just built a landing page, created an email marketing campaign, or sent a newsletter to your subscribers. These marketing initiatives need easily accessible links that redirect your audience to a product or service.

To make your future communications and interactions successful, you need to know what links are being clicked. Enter ‘link tracking’ or ‘URL tracking,’ which can be defined as tracking what’s being clicked.

Businesses track links to evaluate marketing campaign success and reveal engagement statistics. In this article, we’ll answer the question, ‘what is a tracking URL?’, explain how tracking URLs work, and outline the uses and benefits of link tracking tools.

Tracking links are used to manage and measure the effectiveness and efficiency of marketing activities, channels, and campaigns. We recommend using a tracking link whenever you send traffic to a landing page or website from an external channel. These channels include banner ads, PPC campaigns, email, and social media.

In layman’s terms, a tracking link is a regular URL with tags added to the end. These tags, otherwise known as parameters, indicate where a visitor comes from, what content they clicked through, and which campaign this content relates to.

Link tracking works by attaching a digital tracking code to a URL on your website. This parameter works to track user activity (clicks/engagements) for that specific link only. Every tracking link is unique; therefore, the data reported on a link relates only to that link. Put another way, when a user clicks on a tracking link, the information is stored in a different location than clicks on non-tracking links.

Tracking links enable you to measure an advertising or marketing activity’s exact impact upon your business’s growth.

If a retailer runs a sales promotion, they might see a bevy of new customers. However, knowing where those customers are coming from is crucial to understanding the success of your campaign. Did those customers find the sales organically, from a social media ad, or pay-per-click advertisement?

Luckily, tracking links are a highly effective yet simple way to glean this information.

Using tracking links helps you calculate return on investment (ROI) without manually searching through analytical data reports to see how much traffic comes from a single source.

Additionally, by using Bitly, you can save space on social media posts, track email marketing campaigns, and access all relevant information from multiple sources into one user-friendly dashboard.

Tracking URLs: Uses

How do you know which traffic is reaching your website from search and which traffic is a direct result of your marketing activities? You use tracked links.

Imagine you’ve invested in a series of LinkedIn advertisements. How can you tell how much traffic the ads are bringing to your website?

While website analytics can offer insights, tracking links can tell you exactly how much traffic the LinkedIn ad brings to your website. Using this information, you can decide whether this marketing activity is cost-effective and profitable.

Additionally, you can use tracking links to:

  • Determine the click-through rates of an email marketing promotion
  • Track online ads to see how much traffic they generate
  • Track blog posts to see which social media pages are generating the most traffic
  • If your website is being featured on a podcast, press release, or other media feature, a tracking link can reveal how much traffic this promotional activity generates

Synergy for Online and Offline Marketing Activity

With tracking links, you can create a direct link between online and offline marketing methods and analyze offline campaign results.

When executing an offline marketing campaign, you can add a tracking link to your advertisement that is 100% unique to that offline marketing activity.

For example, if you’re a restaurant publishing a newspaper ad offering 20% off to new customers, you can use the URL: http://www.yourrestaurant.com/news20

By creating a dedicated landing page for this ad, you can track how many users view and engage with the offline advertising campaign.

URL shortening for link tracking purposes is fast and straightforward with Bitly.

How do I integrate Bitly with WordPress?

Do you know where your leads are coming from for your website? Today I am going to show you how to create trackable links. So many clients asked me: “Liza, I don’t know where my leads are coming from?” or “We want to run a Facebook campaign but don’t know how to measure its success.”

Well, Google has got two awesome tools for this, one is called Google URL builder, and the other is called Google URL shortener. They are really great tools to use to create trackable links where you can go back and see in Google Analytics and measure your success. Let’s dive straight into it and I will show you how to do it.

Let’s say you have a page, an offer page or a sales page and it has a specific action on the page that you are promoting. Let’s say I want to promote this page. In my case I have a free eBook to give away. What people would normally do is they simply copy this link and put it in wherever they are advertising it. The problem with that is it is really hard to track the success rate of this particular campaign.

Google URL Builder

What you can do is use this tool called Google URL builder. I am going to include this link in the show notes. All you have to do is go on Google and search for this URL builder and you will see it. All you have to do is get the link, and I will get it from my opt-in page. Then here are the steps:

Step #1: Paste the Link

I will go here where it says step #1 and paste the link there.

Step #2: Create Campaign Source

Step number 2 is how you are going to identify this particular campaign. In terms of ‘campaign source’, we will call it FB for short because the link can become quite long.

Step #3: Create Campaign Medium

The ‘campaign medium’ I will say as a promoted post.

Step #4: Create Campaign Team

In ‘campaign term’ you will highlight any key words and this isn’t really relevant so really out of the 5 fields you only need to fill 3 of them. I am going to ignore this one.

Step #5: Add Campaign Content

Then ‘campaign content’ you can use terms and put the keywords here as well.

Step #6: Add Campaign Name

Here is the ‘campaign name’ and I will write eBook which tells me what the campaign is.

Google URL Shortener

When I click submit, I have got this URL. By using this URL it will help me track the success of this specific campaign. However you can see that this is quite long. Here is another great tool called Google URL shortener. All you do is go there and copy this link, bring it over here and put it in here. Click shorten URL and you can see right away that it becomes a much shorter link and if you want you can copy this link and test it to make sure it works. Now you can use that link for your campaign and track any campaigns that you do and see which one is going to give you the best results.
I hope you found this useful. If you have any questions, feel free to type in the comments and I will be more than happy to answer you. All the best with your campaign!
