The selection of barrel-plating or rack-plating for studs requires comprehensive consideration of its size, production volume and performance requirements, which are compared as follows:

 

1. Dimensional suitability


Roller plating: It is suitable for small diameter and moderate length of screws (such as M20 or below), and can batch process hundreds to thousands of pieces. The uniformity of plating is affected by the rotation of the rollers, and there may be differences between the corners and planes.
Hanging plating: Suitable for large size or special shaped rods (e.g. diameter >30mm or length >1m), single piece hanging can ensure the uniformity of plating.


2. Plating performance


Salt spray corrosion resistance: Hanging plating adopts alkaline zinc process, the plating layer is dense and free of inclusions, the salt spray time can be up to 96-240 hours; roll plating acid zinc process is easy to residual brightening agent, the salt spray time is usually 48-72 hours.
Abrasion resistance: Hanging plating thickness can be controlled (more than 10μm), better bonding force, suitable for high load screws.

 

3. Production efficiency and cost


Roll plating: high degree of automation (e.g. gantry type fully automatic line), daily output of up to 5-10 tons, the overall cost is 30%-50% lower.
Hanging plating: Manual/semi-automatic line is the main one, with low output of single tank and high proportion of labor, suitable for small batch of high value-added products.


4. Surface quality


Roll plating: Collision between parts may lead to slight scratches, suitable for surface decorative requirements are not high silk rod.
Hanging plating: no mechanical friction, can maintain screw thread precision (IT7-IT8 grade).

 

Suggested program:
Bulk studs (e.g. standard parts): give priority to roll plating, with vibratory roll plating machine to reduce bruising.
Precision studs (e.g. machine guides): choose hanging plating, using gantry type automatic line to ensure the uniformity of plating.
