Applications of Alkyl Naphthalene

Our alkyl naphthalene base oil with high thermal stability is a compound synthesized from  α-olefins derived from ethylene oligomerization and naphthalene under the action of a specific catalyst. It belongs to the V base oils in API and possesses a variety of excellent properties, thus having wide applications in multiple fields.

1. Lubricating Oil Field

Preparation of Synthetic Lubricating Oil

Alkyl naphthalene, as a base oil, can be used to formulate various synthetic lubricating oils, such as engine oil, gear oil, hydraulic oil, compressor oil and heat transfer oil, etc. When these oil products are operated under harsh conditions, alkyl naphthalene can exhibit excellent performance.

In most application scenarios, alkyl naphthalene is used as a blending component in combination with PAO (polyalphaolefin), which not only replaces expensive ester oils but also demonstrates superior performance in use.

Performance Advantages:

● Excellent Thermal Oxidation Stability: The electron-rich naphthalene chains in alkyl naphthalene base oils can attract oxygen or oxygen-philic groups, prevent the oxidation of hydrocarbons, and interrupt the transfer of oxidation chains, thereby possessing excellent oxidation stability.

● Outstanding Thermal Stability: Among all common synthetic base oils, alkyl naphthalene has the best thermal stability. When the oil sample is heated to a certain extent, the phenomenon of thermal cracking of its oil molecules is relatively small, the viscosity reduction is relatively small, the increase in acid value is not obvious, and the volatilization loss is also relatively small.

● Excellent Hydrolytic Stability: Alkyl naphthalene base oil is composed of hydrocarbons and does not contain functional groups that can be hydrolyzed. Therefore, it has better hydrolytic stability than other base oils made from functional groups.

● Good Solubility and Dispersion Capacity: Although alkyl naphthalene base oil does not contain functional groups, its electron-rich naphthalene nuclei contribute to the polarization of the base oil, thereby enhancing the solubility of additives and the dispersion capacity of sediments.

● Outstanding Anti-Emulsification Performance: Due to its structural characteristics, oil products formulated with alkyl naphthalene have excellent anti-emulsification performance.

2. Other Industrial Applications

● Pour Point Depressant: Alkyl naphthalene (such as model T801) can lower the freezing point of oil products and improve their low-temperature fluidity. Therefore, it can be used in the blending of internal combustion engine oil, axle oil, and total loss shallow dewaxing lubricating oil. However, due to its dark color, it is not suitable for light-colored and multi-grade oils.

● The Raw Material for The Production Of Detergents And Dispersants: Alkyl naphthalene can also be used as a raw material for the production of detergents and dispersants, and is used to manufacture additives that can improve the detergency and dispersancy of lubricating oil.

● Special Applications: Due to its excellent performance, alkyl naphthalene is also suitable as the base oil for heat transfer oil, rotary compressor oil and metalworking oil, and is particularly suitable for applications under harsh working conditions.
