End all gasket sealant discussion - On a mission to stop leaks

27 Sep.,2023

I have done significant research and read many threads over the years on gaskets, sealants, and adhesives. Everyone seems to have an opinion. I would like to compile numerous solutions in one thread. I have gone through the entire drive train on my truck over the past five years and it still leaks virtually every fluid. I realize on these trucks getting rid of all leaks is not likely but I want to work towards a cleaner underside and cleaner garage floor. I am currently working on a T-90 transmission leak but will also be tackling the oil pan/rear main leak at some point.

One thing I have done over the years that I now believe may be the wrong way. Coat both sides of gasket with blue or black Permatex then tighten the bolts and watch the stuff ooze out. This can stuff can cause the gasket to shift, is unsightly, and can ooze inside whatever you are sealing risking coming loose and clogging important passages. How many professional or OEM built engines/transmissions have you seen with blue stuff oozing out. I also believe this is the wrong way because it's never worked for me.

A couple ideas I have read that sound promising.
1) Use Permatex Indian Head gasket shellac compound(20539) or weather strip adhesive on one side of the gasket, use Permatex aviation form-a-gasket(80019) which is non hardening on the other. I have never used the shellac compound and hope it isn't like gasket cement which is miserable to remove.

2) Use Permatex Indian Head gasket shellac compound(20539) on one side and use automotive grease on the other side. This makes dissasembly and reassembly easier in the future.

Please be specific and advise how and where you use products. Example: with cork gasket adhesive on oil pan side, grease on engine block side, etc. With paper gasket I use.....
